Fostering Connection with Popsicles!

Why TBRI®?

Children and families affected by trauma need safe connected relationships to heal. Trust-Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI) is an evidenced-based caregiving model that provides practical and effective principles to build relationships needed for healing. We bring together individuals and organizations to infuse TBRI® practices across the state, to give children and families access to the relationships and support they need to overcome trauma and thrive.

Crossroads NOLA foster parent Carrie Norris has been certified since 2017, and she has become a big believer in TBRI®: “I am so thankful for the TBRI® training that I have received since becoming a foster parent.” Carrie uses TBRI® strategies daily to help her build connection, correct, and empower the children in her care. “One thing I have found particularly helpful is matching my child’s behavior (i.e., picking the same color straw for our drink, taking the same bite of food during meals, eating the same color popsicle). This is a great way to build connection and trust with a child.” She also finds “re-do’s” as a great way to correct behavior: “Being able to talk with respect about the inappropriate behavior, model the appropriate behavior and then provide a child with an opportunity to “re-do” the behavior over again provides for a strategy to successfully change behavior while also focusing on the praising the child.”

Foster parents like Carrie are seeing TBRI® bring hope and healing to the kids in their homes: “I LOVE TBRI® and can see changes in my child every day when I consistently use TBRI® strategies.” But TBRI® is not just for foster parents! Caregivers and professionals working with children in a variety of settings around our state have seen the benefits of implementing TBRI® strategies.
